Intrepretive Centre

Ancient Echoes Interpretive Centre was established by a group of dedicated volunteers and landowners interested in promoting the history and ecology of the Coal Mine Ravine area.

When the school closed in 1994, the Herschel Development Committee bought the school and surrounding property. They began raising funds and acquiring donations for renovations. Soon the building had a new lease on life.

Since 1997, the Exhibit Room has featured an 18-painting exhibit titled "The Disappearance and Resurgence of the Plains Buffalo", by Metis artist Jo Cooper from Fronteneac, Quebec. The exibit tells the story of the plains tribes whose lives revolved around the buffalo, and how the changes in history brought about the animal's decline and near extinction.

Browse through the displays of local traditional plants and herbs. Learn more about the petroglyphs, Aboriginal heritage and the rich fossil finds. And view a large assortment of beautiful taxidermy by Lyal Waddington, including a full-size mount of a 900 kilogram bull buffalo.
